Airmen Selection Process of Indian Air Force
Indian Air Force is the premium organization of our country. Like Indian Army has Soldiers, the Indian Air Force has Airmen. Airmen are soldiers of the Indian Air Force. Selection of Airmen is done in Group ‘X’ and ‘Y’.
Most people think that Group ‘X’ is a technical entry and Group ‘Y’ is a non-technical entry. But that is not 100% true because Group ‘X’ has some non-technical trades like Education Instructor and Group ‘Y’ has technical trades like Radio Tech, Auto Tech, etc.
Various candidates are eager to know about the Airmen selection process of the Indian Air Force. So, let me explain step by step.
First, you need to fill the online application form as and when notified by Indian Air Force. Once you fill the application form without any error, your form is submitted and you will be notified about the written examination date and center. At that particular time and at a particular examination center you have to be present to appear in the written examination.
There are questions from English, Reasoning, Arithmetic & General Awareness for Group ‘Y’ trades. The question paper will be of 45 minutes for Group ‘Y’ and 60 minutes for Group ‘X’. Group ‘X’ exam will have questions from Maths and Physics too. Questions of Reasoning and Arithmetic are not as tough as we have in SSC and Banking examinations. If you prepare current affairs of last six months then you are going to attempt about all the questions.
Once you qualify as Airmen’s written test then you will be called for Physical Endurance Test. In which you need to do 10 Sit-ups, 10 push-ups, and 20 Squats. Candidates also need to qualify for 1600 meters race in 06 minutes 30 seconds. If a candidate completes running within 06 minutes and 30 seconds then he will be given 3 marks. If a candidate takes more than 6.5 minutes but less than 7 minutes then he will be awarded 2 marks. A candidate who completes the run between 7 and 8 minutes there will be given 1 mark.
Candidates who qualify Physical Endurance Test will have to undergo an Adaptability test. This test is to check the mental strength of the candidates. In the Adaptability test, candidates have to answer certain situations and tick the appropriate answer. This test does not have any wrong answer but there are marks defined for all the options. The option which is most appropriate will have the highest marks. So, candidates should attempt all questions.
Once candidates qualify Adaptability test, then they have to undergo a medical examination. In medical examination, everything is checked properly. Everything means everything. Candidates should not have any serious disease and they should be fit to become Airmen in Indian Air Force. Doctors conduct Sugar, Blood Pressure, Urine, ECG, X-Ray tests. Candidates should not be overweight or underweight as per their prescribed table which is as per height and age. IAF declares some candidates temporary unfit and they get time to appeal within 3 months and some are declared permanent unfit. Like in the case of Colorblindness, Doctor will permanently unfit the candidate. If you are declared fit then you will be issued a green card.
The next phase in the Airmen Selection process comes to the All India Merit list. Once you have qualified for all the stages, then you need to wait for the final merit list. There are Main and Stand by candidates on the merit list. If your name appears on the merit list as the main candidate then it is sure that you will be called for training within 06 months. If you are on the waiting list then you may have to wait up to one year or more. It also happens that candidates on the waiting list do not get joining letters.
Airmen Training & Promotion
Once you have joining letter in your hand then IAF will call you at your respective Airmen Selection Centre. From there they will route you for Joint Basic Phase Training (JBPT) at Belagavi (Earlier Belgaum), Karnataka. IAF will allot trades as per your Group ‘X’ or ‘Y’ after completion of JBPT. Then you have to go for Trade training. When you complete your trade training, you become permanent staff of the Indian Air Force. The first rank of IAF irrespective of Group ‘X’ or ‘Y’ is Aircraftsman except for Education Instructor for the first rank is Sergeant. In Army Education Instructor is called an ‘Education Havildar’. Following are air force ranks in increase order for Airmen.
